The difference between Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel

Oct 21, 2025
Composition:

Carbon steel is primarily composed of iron and carbon (carbon content 0.02%-2.11%).

Stainless steel contains alloying elements such as chromium (≥10.5%) and nickel to form a protective chromium oxide layer.

Performance:

Corrosion Resistance
Stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion due to its chromium oxide layer, while carbon steel is susceptible to rust.

Mechanical Properties
Carbon steel has high hardness and good wear resistance; stainless steel has greater ductility.

Magnetic Properties
Carbon steel has significant magnetic properties, while stainless steel is generally non-magnetic or weakly magnetic.
