The Effect of The Number of Folds on The Filter Flow Rate

Jun 11, 2025
The number of folds in a filter element has a significant effect on the flow rate. It directly affects the filtration area and flow path, thereby affecting the flow rate. The more folds there are, the more pleats there are in the filter element, which increases the effective filtration area, and theoretically provides a larger flow area, allowing for a higher flow rate. However, the actual flow rate is also affected by other factors:

Filter element size:
The diameter and length of the filter element directly affect the flow area. Larger filter elements generally provide a larger flow area, allowing for a higher flow rate

Filter accuracy:
The pore size (i.e., filtration accuracy) of the filter element also affects the flow rate. Smaller pores require higher pressure to pass through, which reduces the flow rate

Working pressure difference:
The pressure difference on both sides of the filter element also affects the flow rate. A higher pressure difference can increase the flow rate, but it may also cause the filter element to clog faster or shorten its service life

Fluid properties:
These include the viscosity and temperature of the fluid. Fluids with lower viscosity usually have a larger flow rate, and the viscosity of the fluid decreases at high temperatures, which also increases the flow rate. ‌

Degree of contamination‌:
As the use time increases, the accumulated impurities on the surface of the filter element will cause the flow rate to gradually decrease. ‌

Material and design‌:
Different materials and designs will affect the flow rate of the fluid. For example, polyethersulfone (PES) pleated filter elements will also affect the flow rate due to their material characteristics. ‌

Therefore, although increasing the number of folds can increase the filtration area and increase the flow rate, the combined effects of many other factors need to be considered in actual use.
