Difference Between Suction Oil Filter and Return Oil Filter
May 14, 2025
The suction filter is mainly used to protect the oil pump and filter out larger particles of impurities; the return oil filter focuses on maintaining the cleanliness of the system oil and performing fine filtering.
1、Position and Function Differences
►The suction filter is installed at the oil pump suction port, mainly intercepting large particles of impurities (such as metal debris and dust) to prevent damage to the oil pump.
►The return oil filter is located at the end of the return oil pipeline, responsible for filtering fine pollutants (such as wear particles and colloid substances) generated by the system to ensure the cleanliness of the oil in the return oil tank.
2、Filtration Accuracy and Structure
►The suction filter element belongs to coarse filtration, and the accuracy range is generally 50-180μm. Metal mesh or wire gap structure is often used to reduce flow resistance.
►The return oil filter element needs fine filtration, and the accuracy is usually less than 20μm. The fiber filter material folding design is often used to improve the filtration efficiency.
3、Pressure Difference and Working Pressure
►The initial pressure difference of the suction filter element is ≤0.003MPa, and the maximum pressure difference is ≤0.02MPa to avoid affecting the oil suction capacity of the oil pump.
►The limit pressure difference of the return oil filter is 0.2-0.35MPa, and the working pressure requirement is lower than 1MPa. The impact of hydraulic shock on the filter element needs to be considered.
4、Flow selection coefficient
►The flow of the suction filter element is selected according to the maximum flow of the oil pump multiplied by 1.5-2 times the coefficient to ensure smooth oil suction.
►The return oil filter element needs to be multiplied by 2-4 times the peak flow of the system return oil to cope with instantaneous flow fluctuations.
