Working Principle of a Polymer Melt Filter Element

 

A polymer melt filter element is designed to remove contaminants, gels, unmelted particles, carbonized materials, and other impurities from molten polymers during the extrusion, spinning, film, sheet, and compounding processes. It ensures product quality, protects downstream equipment, and improves production efficiency.
 

1. Filtration Process

When the polymer melt is pumped through the filtration system under pressure:

  1. Molten polymer enters the filter housing through the inlet.
  2. The melt flows through the multi-layer filter media (such as stainless steel woven mesh, sintered mesh, or fiber metal felt).
  3. Solid contaminants larger than the filter's pore size are captured on the filter surface or within the filter layers.
  4. The purified polymer melt passes through the filter element and exits the system for further processing.


2. Contaminant Retention Mechanisms

The filter element removes impurities through several mechanisms:

  • Surface Filtration: Larger particles are trapped on the outer surface of the filter media.
  • Depth Filtration: Smaller contaminants are captured within the multiple layers of the filter structure.
  • Adsorption and Interception: Fine particles and gels are intercepted as the melt flows through complex pore channels.


3. Pressure Differential Monitoring

As contaminants accumulate:

  • The pressure drop across the filter gradually increases.
  • When the differential pressure reaches a preset value, the filter element should be cleaned, replaced, or switched to a standby filter.
  • This prevents excessive pressure buildup and maintains stable production.
